Uses & Gratifications

We use multiple types of media devices such as a TV, Phone etc. Sometimes we use these devices to watch certain types of media in specific situations for a required response. An example would be when in a bad mood or bored, we seek media as a distraction from our mood. This is true because if someone was in a bad mood they will choose to either watch TV or a Film, now the genre of this film as an example will probably be a comedy film. By putting on a comedy film it will automatically change your mood because the film will more than likely make you laugh. Uses and Gratifications can generate loads of different responses and this has been proven by a TV series that is called Gogglebox. In this programme it shows multiple people that are a different sexuality, race etc. And it shows how specific people reacted to what was on in the last week.

As an example, if I was in quite a good mood I will choose to watch a film called The Amazing Spider 2. I will choose to watch this film because it will make me feel for a specific character such as Spider-man (Andrew Garfield). I will want to feel for a specific character because I will kind of want to lower my mood, because if i'm in a really good mood and I watch a Action/Sci-Fi/Romance film it will make the film feel a bit more emotional so on the other hand it will make the film a bit better in my eyes. I would feel for the character Spider-man in this film because in the film he goes through a lot when he has flashbacks of Gwen's father telling him to stay away from here all though it is his Girlfriend in present day. And he also has to protect the city as well as denying his past best friends grant as he needs Spider-man's blood to stay alive. These are some of the reasons why I would feel for this specific character. Personally I don't like to be scared so I will tend to avoid Horror films however I will watch some Horror TV series as an example I watched The Enfield Haunting and this TV series was about a house that is haunted by a Poltergeist, apparently based on a true story. The story took place in London. However on the other hand if I would want to be cheered up I would probably want a TV series called The Inbetweeners. I will choose to watch The Inbetweeners because when I see how bad there lives are it will suddenly cheer me up. But also when watching it we can kind of relate to at least one of The Inbetweeners. So on the other hand from this it makes the show really comedic when we did some of the things they did in the past. I am still able to watch The Inbetweeners because as I mentioned in the first paragraph we can access all of the episodes on the majority of Media devices such as TV Box Sets on Sky. So i suppose I mainly watch The Inbetweeners so I can relate to some of the characters and kind of feel for them when they are in situations that I have been in. I think we mainly watch TV because it is kind of a major form of Escapism this is because people watch TV to get away from there everyday life and by watching TV they can kind of look into somebody else's life and compare it to there's so they might see their life isn't really that bad once they see someone else's in hell on a soap for example such as Coronation Street.

Gogglebox is a programme that shows the British public reacting to specific TV programme's that have been played within the last week. This programme can make people respond in a numerous amount of ways because it can make us laugh about their reaction and get emotional about what is on TV as an example a TV programme called "Educating Yorkshire". When this specific programme was played it made people get a bit emotional because it was about a boy that was just about to sit his GCSE's and this boy has a neurological disorder, so he really struggles to speak because he has a stammer. But suddenly with his English teachers help he is able to speak with the sound of music. In my opinion I did find this programme quite emotional because it really kind of shouts anything is possible when the boy gives a goodbye speech at the end of the programme and everyone is teared up both people watching and the students and teachers. My reaction towards this programme was near enough the same as everyone's displayed on the screen, I did find this emotional because this boy has just overcome something many people cannot with this terrible neurological disorder. And also this programme was fairly inspiring because no-one was taking there eyes off of the screen because everyone was happy for the boy with this neurological disorder and I believe it did give people confidence to do things because as I said it kind of shouts anything is possible.
