Textual Analysis

For this textual analysis I will be reviewing they Friends episode called The One Where No-One Is Ready in terms of how well it works as a Situation Comedy. The situation comedy Friends had a total amount of 10 seasons and a total amount of 236 episodes. The Friends series was also created by two people called David Crane and Marta Kauffman. Friends was also seen as one of the best situation comedy's in world and it also got a 9/10 rating off of IMDb. Typically every episode of Friends resolves the story that is introduced in a specific episode, however they do often include story or character arcs that stretch throughout a number of seasons (10) so on the other hand they use both Open & Closed Narratives. As an example the relationship between Monica and Richard lasts throughout multiple seasons where as in the next episode Joey and Chandler will not be arguing about what happened in the last episode where they was fighting over who sat in a specific chair. Now I am going to move onto talk about the episode where no-one is ready. In this episode Ross is trying to get everyone ready for a party at the Museum where he works. And he only has 22 minutes to get everyone ready and as the time gets shorter he gets more stressed that everyone is not ready because a lot of series of events are taking place in the 22 minute time gap; such as Joey and Chandler fighting over a chair. This episode also includes all six stars which are; Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Mathew Perry, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer. Friends is one of a number of example's of a Situation Comedy. A Sitcom mainly includes a set such as a wok place or social space such as a bar or cafe that might be frequently visited. Also in a Sitcom they will more than likely use a lot of stereotypes such as in this episode that I am going to analyse they use a stereotype such as girl's such as Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) taking ages to get ready. And this on the other hand causes Ross (David Schwimmer) to get more and more stressed, therefore making it into a better Situation Comedy so they can make people laugh at the events taking place. This episode of friends also uses a Realist narrative and by doing this, it will allow more people to connect with the Friends series when they are acting out things that they might have done in the past as an example.

Throughout this episode the set is in Monica's and Rachel's apartment, which creates a situation within it's self, including a group of friends that are trying to get ready to go to Ross's black tie event at the museum. This on the other hand creates comedy that is over exaggerated to create a great Sitcom. Also straight after I watched this episode of Friends called "The One Where No-One Is Ready" I noticed a pattern. And this pattern is that all six of the Friends get more and more annoyed due to a series of events that create for the next episodes, this also make this specific Friend's episode both more comedic and humorous. An example of some of they events that take place during this Friends episode that makes Ross more annoyed is Chandler and Joey fighting over a specific chair in Monica's and Rachel's apartment. This all started off because Joey went into the fridge and ended up drinking fat because he thought it was Cider. This on the other hand arced to Joey stealing Chandlers spot on the chair and this carried through, throughout most of the episode causing either of them not to get ready because of the event taking place about the chair. During this event Phoebe ends up getting humus thrown at her and this ruins her dress so she has to go and change wasting more time and making Ross more annoyed as now he is the only one that is ready. Also after Joey steals Chandler's chair when he went to the toilet; in retaliation Chandler hides all of Joey's underwear making it un-able to get ready because he happens to not be wearing any underwear. So on the other hand he can not get changed into his suit for the event at the museum. In retaliation to this Joey stormed out the room and said he will do "the opposite". So he decided to put on all of Chandler's clothes while doing lunges to make him more annoyed. This on the other hand is making Ross more annoyed because before this he shouted at his girlfriend Rachel as she was taking to long to get ready when debating what shoes to wear and this on the other hand is using a stereotype that it takes ages for girls or women to get ready. Another event that took place that made Ross more annoyed was Monica's situation with Richard and they happened to turn this into a humorous even by Monica sending loads of voice mails to Richards phone. This on the other hand stops Monica continuing getting ready because she is fighting over the phone to ring Richard and answering questions about Rachel's clothing that she is suggesting. This also makes Ross annoyed when he realizes everyone is not fully ready and he still hasn't got a cab so they can go the black tie museum event. I think the last event tat takes place that delays from going to the event is when everyone is ready except for Rachel because Ross shouted at her in anger because the clock was ticking and barely anyone was ready so they can go to the event. So from this Ross is told to drink the fat out of the fridge by Joey and Rachel after he upset Rachel. This on the other hand delays them even more but he doesn't care because he really wants his girlfriend Rachel to come to the event, however in the end he does not end up drinking the fat after Rachel stops it because she gets emotional because he actually would have drunken the fat this in it's self makes a situation and they made it comedic by Joey saying "Hey, let's see what else he will do?". To conclude this they all ended up going to the black tie event at the museum and at the end of the episode they decided to use a comedic ending by someone taking Chandlers chair and at the end Chandler got annoyed and asked for his underwear, this was relating to the argument before about the chair when Chandler hid Joey's underwear. Also during this episode I noticed that Chandler and Joey are quite passive aggressive towards each other, which means they will deny or not listen to anything they say. This on the other hand makes the Friends episodes more comedic because they are passive aggressive to each other in the majority of episodes. However they will mainly not arc something onto the next episode if it isn't a big situation as an example they will no arc the argument about the chair onto the next episode because it probably won't be funny anymore to the public viewing the Friends episodes. Therefore they will arc the situation with Monica and Richard as an example.

To summarize all of this information on the Friends episode "The One Where No-One's Ready" and about some of the characters such as Chandler and Joey. There is mainly a lot to offer in Situation Comedy's that some people might not pick up. Most people mainly think Sitcom's follow off of a single plot device. However when I watched the Friends episode I saw that it follows off of multiple arc's given out from each episode, and it also focuses on all of the six main characters within the Friends series. So on the other hand the series will be classed as a realist and multi-strand narrative because it focuses on all of the characters lives on what they have done in the past etc. They use a multi-strand narrative because it is able to make situations better or worse to make each individual Friends episode more comedic or humorous, so from this they may be able to make the audience laugh. In my pinion I enjoyed this episode of Friends that I analyzed because it focused on one main set so everyone was together most of the time. And by doing this they make the episode a lot more comedic or humorous. Also another thing I liked about the Friends episode is that it used a Linear pattern so in other words they kept everything in chronological order throughout the whole episode while keeping it comedic and as Ross go more annoyed. To conclude this I think the filming, editing etc, of this episode was great as well as the script writing to make it extremely comedic for the public to watch.
