Watershed

The Watershed is a type of TV that restricts mature programme's before 21:00pm, by doing this they can protect children from watching programme's such as Game Of Thrones that shows Violence, Strong Language etc. If children did watch this TV programme they could imitate some of the things seen on TV. So on the other hand Game Of Thrones as an example will be aired during the watershed and the watershed time ranges from 21:00pm to 05:30am. If a programme includes anything that may offend people in society or teach children bad things it will be aired during the watershed. And if a programme didn't show any bad things that won't offend people it'll be aired before the watershed so young children can watch that programme. However if a show did include any swearing and it was being aired before the watershed they will put a sound effect (bleep) above the swearing so it is hard for the children to read and from this the watershed could stop people being offended or teaching people bad things. Therefore if content that may be offensive is shown before the watershed and it has happened in the past with music videos etc. Ofcom will take action on the broadcaster and they will more than likely receive a fine for airing specific content that may be offence to some people in the UK that might certain religion.

In the past, the watershed was a good idea for people that were the right age or someone's parents might think there child is mature enough to watch a specific programme and we will not imitate anything seen on TV that is resembled as a bad thing in society such as racism. However if an adult wanted to watch an adult contemporary programme the idea of the watershed would assume that their children or child might be going to sleep or sleeping at around the time of 21:00pm. On the other hand there children or child may not be asleep at this time and they may hear what is on TV from downstairs and they could hear some strong language so on the other this could teach them to imitate some of these swear heard on TV. These are some of the reasons why people find the watershed quite redundant for it isn't really that great at protecting children from offensive programme's. However it can also depend on the parents of the children because maybe they won't be taking extra precaution to make sure their children or child doesn't hear or watch anything offensive or imitating on TV. And due to recent advancements in technology teenagers, young adults etc, are able to watch whatever they want online whether it be imitating or not. To conclude this I think the watershed is very ineffective in today's society because of all of the advancements in technology and by this we can access any TV show on the internet whether it be on a illegal website or a legal website.
